The ‘best’ walking tours around Warmbad-Villach
Family walk from Heiligengeist to the Hundsmarhof
From the car park of the former Dobratsch ski resort in Heiligengeist, you initially follow an asphalt road past some pretty meadows and uphill, always following the signposts for the ‘Hundsmarhof’. After a few minutes, you will cross the path of a ski lift and enter the forest. By this time, the majority of the ascent is already behind you. Now the gravel road follows a gently undulating course up to the meadows of the Hundsmarhof. The return journey follows the same route.
Route: 5.4 km (easy) | Duration: 2:45 hours | Equipment: robust shoes
1st stage of the Dobratsch circular route - from Warmbad-Villach to Bad Bleiberg
The first stage of this circular route runs from Warmbad-Villach to the peaceful mountain slopes of the Dobratsch and from here to the remote Bleiberger Hochtal valley. Hikers can enjoy the virtually in-tact landscapes as well as gaining an initial insight into the rich cultural heritage of Villach’s local mountain. Hikers can see several sights during this first stage including two karst caves and the Tscheltschnigkogel with the remains of a settlement from the late antiquity. From here, follow an old bridle path along the northern side of the Dobratsch where the Hundsmarhof awaits, inviting passers-by to enjoy a refreshment break. Views of Villach open up from the sunny Heiligengeist. One level down and you walk along the romantic Weissenbachgraben to Hüttendorf, the former miners’ settlement in the shade of the mountain. Here you enter a world in itself – a world shaped by mining over the centuries, its charm derived in part from its own quirky architecture. Finally, you arrive in Bad Bleiberg, the destination for this stage, where you cannot fail to recognise the special character and the particular charm of the area.
Route: 20.2 km (difficult) | Duration: 6:30 hours | Equipment: robust shoes
Hiking in the three countries region – three countries walk (Carinthia, Friuli and Slovenia)
From the Seltschacher Alm, the route leads to the point where the three countries interconnect. From here, you walk to the Madonna della Neve chapel and past the fortifications on the ascent to the red Madonna. After a detour to Slovenia, the route then leads back up to the Seltschacher Alm.
Route: 9.3 km (medium) | Duration: 4:10 hours | Equipment: robust shoes
